Your Privacy Should Not Cost Three Subscriptions

Somewhere along the way, protecting yourself online turned into a shopping list. A VPN from one company. A password manager from another. Ad and tracker blocking from a third, if you got that far at all. Three logins, three renewal dates, three privacy policies written by three legal teams in three countries. The tools are good. These products are not sold together by accident of marketing. They are bundled because they cover three separate points where a normal day leaks information, and covering two of the three leaves the third wide open.

  • The network path. On hotel wifi, on a train, on the guest network at a conference, everything between your device and the wider internet passes through equipment you do not control. A VPN closes that stretch.
  • The credentials. The most common way an account is lost is not a broken cipher. It is the same password, reused, surfacing in a breach at some company you forgot you signed up to. A password manager makes every password different and makes that failure mode disappear.
  • The resolver. Before your device can load anything, it has to ask which server holds it. That question goes somewhere, and whoever answers it can see every domain you touch. Filtering there stops advertising and tracking before a single byte is fetched.

The resolver is the part most privacy bundles skip

Ask most people what a VPN does and they will say it hides what they browse. It does not, quite. It moves the network path somewhere else, which is genuinely valuable, but the lookup of which domain you are visiting still has to happen. Point that lookup at whatever your internet provider handed you, and you have moved the observation post rather than closed it. Filtering at the resolver is also the only kind of blocking that covers a whole device. A browser extension protects the browser. It does nothing for the app that phones home from the background, the smart TV in the living room, or the game your child installed on a tablet last week. Move the filter one layer down and every app on the device is covered at once, including the ones with no settings screen to open. The same mechanism, applied to a household, is what powers DNS based parental controls.

One jurisdiction instead of three

Buying privacy from three vendors means accepting three legal regimes. A VPN incorporated in one country, a password vault synced through servers in another, a filtering service quietly resolving through a third. Each may be excellent on its own terms. Together they form a map of your life distributed across borders you never chose, governed by laws you never read, several of which allow a foreign authority to compel disclosure without ever telling you.

Questions people ask before switching

Does a VPN on its own hide which sites I visit?

Not entirely. It protects the network path, which matters a great deal on any network you do not own. But the lookup that turns a domain name into an address still happens, and whoever answers it sees the domain. Pairing the tunnel with a resolver you trust is what closes that gap, which is why Shield includes both rather than selling them separately.

Why is a password manager part of a privacy product?

Because encryption in transit is wasted if the account at the other end falls to a password that leaked from an unrelated breach three years ago. The tunnel and the vault defend against different attackers, and an attacker only needs the one you skipped.

How many devices does Shield cover?

Ten for the VPN. The password manager and DNS filtering work across all your devices without a separate count.

Is Shield the same as an InfoPeak suite plan?
